Note: The official record provided by the Army above is incorrect. Individuals have come forth to set the record straight.
Alton died of wounds from an AK47 fired by the NVA near an NVA trench line. He died immediately according to witnesses. Later a flame track was used to clear the bunker area and his body was scorched. He was dead long before the flame track was used.
The Coffelt record indicating a friendly airstrike killed him was incorrect. The air strike occurred long before the actual incident.
