Alton died of wounds from an AK47 fired by the NVA near an NVA trench line. He died immediately according to witnesses. Later a flame track was used to clear the bunker area and his body was scorched. He was dead long before the flame track was used.
The Coffelt record indicating a friendly airstrike killed him was incorrect. The air strike occurred long before the actual incident.
